President Ronald Reagan’s approach to Mikhail Gorbachev and the Soviets in the 1980s resonates with me today when I think about caregivers taking care of the elderly. In a prior post, I discussed the abhorrent behavior of a Florida caregiver who bilked more than $1,000,000 from a 94 year old client. This caregiver was a convicted felon and was charged with theft at least 10 times before going to work as the woman’s caregiver.

Pay attention to the endless home health agency ads on TV. “We only hire the best caregivers”, “Our caregivers are the most compassionate.”, “Our caregivers must pass a stringent screening program.”

Well, you can see that all of these statements are empty and subjective. The statements are designed to put you at ease and make you comfortable in your decision process of choosing a home health agency. The fact of the matter is that many home health agencies do not perform background checks or drug test their caregivers.

Trust and verify the quality of the caregivers of the home health agency you choose by reviewing their C-Screen Rating. C-Screen lets you see how employers screen their employees, including which employers background check and drug test and which do not.
